Edenfred Residency Program, Deadline: January 1, 2010

Established in 2004 and located in a 1916 Georgian-style mansion in the Highlands neighborhood of Madison, Wisconsin, Edenfred is a place providing artists uninterrupted time to work in a peaceful setting of 1.5 acres of part-like woodland with walking trails, minutes from downtown, Lake Mendota and the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus.

Edenfred is dedicated to the development of the arts and culture and is especially interested in encouraging interdisciplinary dialogue. Resident fellows are required to have some direct interaction with the Madison community during their stay. The house is particularly well-suited to collaborative team residencies. Edenfred has a visual art studio and four guest suites but no specialized work spaces for different disciplines (no dance studio, no private music room, etc.).

Creative artists in all disciplines are encouraged to apply.

Santa Fe Art Institute, Residency Deadline: December 31, 2009

The Santa Fe Art Institute was founded in 1985 with the aim to provide unique opportunities for emerging artists interested in pursuing brief yet intense periods of study with critically acclaimed visiting artists.

Located in a modern, 17,000 square-foot facility designed by renowned Mexican architect Ricardo Legorreta. it's mission has expanded to take on the "exploration of the intersections of contemporary art and society", and brings together prominent individuals and institutions in the arts, sciences, and humanities.

It's artist and writer residencies are of 1-3 month duration. SFAI supports over 50 residents per year. Residents are housed in rooms with private baths and are provided well-lit studio spaces. Successful applicants have one calendar year from their acceptance date to complete a residency (only closed in January).

Contemporary Artists Center, Troy, NY. Deadline: December 15, 2009

The Contemporary Artists Center has recently opened its newest international artists' residency program on the campus of the Woodside National Historic Register Site in Troy, NY, and is now accepting applications for the first Winter/Spring season.

The CAC focuses on emerging contemporary artists and accepts applicants who offer quality in their art and encourages diversity of style, medium (2-D, 3-D, 4-D) and concepts.

The residency program can be from 2 weeks to six months and offers artists the time and support to create new work and fosters an environment that encourages creativity, experimentation, and collaboration.

Facility features high-ceiling, adaptable studio space in a 150-year-old Neo-gothic chapel, open 24 hours a day with some specialized studio facilities, exhibition space, and free access to all CAC events. Eyebeam Fellowships 2010 - Deadline: December 11, 2009

Eyebeam is a leading not-for-profit art and technology center in the USA. Its unique collaborative environment fosters fellowships and residencies, research, education, public programming, and a vital web space, eyebeam.org. It is located in the heart of NYC’s Chelsea art district in a resource rich 15,000 sq.ft. space. 

Eyebeam is seeking applications from artists, hackers, engineers, designers, curators, and creative technologists to participate in its 2010 Fellowship program. Fellows at Eyebeam spearhead new research and develop new work. The ideal Fellow has experience working with and making innovative technological art or creative technology projects, and has a passion for collaborative development. Fellows will bring this experience and working approach to Eyebeam where they will have the opportunity to engage in their own independent projects, projects initiated by other Residents or Fellows, and projects conceived collaboratively with Eyebeam’s staff, Fellows, Residents, and research partners.

Up to four Fellows will be selected for the upcoming 11-month cycle, which will run from March 1, 2010 to January 31, 2011. Selected Fellows will be expected to spend at least four days per week working at Eyebeam. Fellows are expected to contribute to the Eyebeam community as mentors to residents and youth working at Eyebeam and as principals in research initiatives, programs, and education. Leadership in Research Groups is compulsory and is explained further, below.

Fellows receive a $30,000 stipend during their stay in NYC with Eyebeam. It is possible for Fellows to take on additional external teaching or consulting work, as long as s/he can fulfill commitments to Eyebeam at the same time.

International applicants are welcome to apply, although we do not have the resources to provide travel or accommodation. We are happy to work with selected applicants, where required, to help them to secure funds to cover these expenses. International Fellows are responsible for securing their own visas for the Fellowship period. We are happy to provide paperwork and advice to help expedite the process.

Eyebeam’s current Research Groups include Sustainability, Education, Open Culture, Project Blackbird (Humor and Code), and Urban Research. For more information on each of these Research Groups, including descriptions, related projects, and participants, please see the Research section of our web site. Within each of these Research Groups, Eyebeam is looking for applicants with specific interest in and crossover with their own work in the following inquiry threads:

  • Education in Practice: Engagement with artists working in community-based and collaborative projects with youth, peers, or other targeted audiences. We favor ideas over skills and formative experiments over fixed curricula. (Education)
  • Design for Social Change: Investigation into collaborative design process and methodology as it relates to creative intervention, activism, and tactical media; expanding our perspectve on “open source” to include the built environment, urban development, and public policy.   • Open Source Ideologies: Expanding Eyebeam’s ongoing research in Open Culture with a particular focus on intellectual property, licensing issues, and law and its relation to artists and cultural innovators.  (Open Culture)

Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation - ArtsCONNECT Deadline: March 15, 2010

ArtsCONNECT supports performing arts tours of American and international artists through presenter consortia and partnerships in the mid-Atlantic region of the U.S.

Presenters eligible for support must be located in the Foundation's service area: Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Virginia, and West Virginia.


Presenter consortia must include at least three presenting organizations from at least two mid-Atlantic states collaborating to bring the same artist to their communities.

Applications that include presenting organizations from three or more states within the region served by the Foundation will be given priority consideration.

The application deadline applies to projects taking place between July 1, 2010 and June 30, 2011.


The 2010 ArtsCONNECT Guidelines will be available in mid-November.

2010 Artist in Residency Program, Vallauris, France, Deadline: October 15

Located in the old southern French town of Vallauris, this artists in residency program welcomes international artists from all horizons to meet and collaborate with local artists and to research and create new work. Since April 2002, over 100 creators of different nationalities have taken part in the program.

Benefits: studios, independent furnished bedrooms and a gallery where works are presented at the end of the residency period.

Activities: Workshops, conferences and exhibitions are organized with the resident artists. Partnerships with the local School of Fine Arts, the local government and international organizations.

The Millay Colony for the Arts, Deadline: October 1, 2009

The Millay Colony, an artist-in-residency program located in the Berkshire Mountains of New York, is addressed to writers, visual artists and composers of all ages and career levels. International artists are encouraged to apply.

Located in Austerlitz, at Steepletop, the country estate that belonged to the poet Edna St. Vincent Millay, about 2 1/2 hours north of NYC.

Kala Art Institute, Deadline: Oct. 31, 2009

Kala Art Institute is located in the former Heinz ketchup factory in West Berkeley and it's artist-in-residence program provides 24-hour access to it's Print Studio and Electronic Media Center. The program is geared towards providing short- and long-term communal studio space at low monthly rates to both emerging and established artists.

Kala also awards eight cash awards a year, unlimited access to Kala’s facilities for up to six months, and a culminating show in the Kala Gallery, through a highly competitive jurying process. The Fellowship Award is geared towards supporting artists in completing specific projects or bodies of work that would benefit from Kala's specialized equipment.

Deadline: October 31, 2009 for residencies starting in December 2009, January, February or March 2010.

Vermont Studio Center, International Residency Fellowships Deadline: October 1, 2009

The Vermont Studio Center is the largest international residency program in the U.S. and is open year-round to artists and writers from all around the world.
Setting: historic 30-building campus along the Gihon River in Johnson, Vermont, a village in the heart of the northern Green Mountains.
The center hosts residents per month, each of whom receives an individual studio, private room and meals. In addition, their program includes a roster of Visiting Artists and Writers (2 painters, 2 sculptors and 2 writers per month) who offer slide talks/readings and individual studio visits/conferences.

Duration: 2 - 12 weeks

Deadline: October 1, 2009 (recommended deadline for summer 2010 fellowships). Next alternative deadlines: February 15 and June 15, 2010. Best to apply at least 6 mos. prior to preferred start date, though VSC will consider applications received as late as 8 weeks in advance of the month(s) for which one is applying.

Ragdale Foundation, Residency Deadline: September 15, 2009

Artist in Residency opportunities addressed to: artists at all stages of their careers and seeks to create a mix of various experience levels in each group of residents. Through a competitive application process, Ragdale offers residencies to visual artists, writers, composers, and interdisciplinary artists such as those working in sound, performance, choreography, etc.

Located at the historic summer home of Arts and Crafts architect Howard Van Doren Shaw, Ragdale exists in a peaceful setting adjacent to over 50 acres of prairie. Residents reside in live/work spaces in the Ragdale House, Barnhouse and Friends' studios. Ragdale is located one mile from downtown Lake Forest, and just 30 miles (only one hour by train) from downtown Chicago.

Virginia Center for the Creative Arts - Deadline: September 15, 2009

The Virginia Center for the Creative Arts is an international working retreat for writers, visual artists and composers located at Mount San Angelo, Virginia. For 35 years, the VCC has attracted renowned artists as well as talented younger artists.

Each year over 300 artists participate and, typically, 22 fellows are in residence at the one time. Directly associated with Sweet Briar Collage that generously allows fellows to use many of its facilities and services.


Duration: 2 weeks - 2 months

Deadline: September 15, 2009 for residencies from February to May, 2010

Selection process: highly competitive

Residencies include: private bedroom, three meals a day and private studio

Omi Arts International, Deadline: December 11, 2009

Art Omi International Artists Residency calls for submissions for the 2010 visual artists’ residency program.

Located in the hamlet of Omi, in the Hudson River Valley, New York, Art Omi invites 30 international artists and one critic in residence to be part of the Omi community, create new work and experiment with possible new collaborations.

Residency dates for 2010 are: June 27 to July 19, 2010.

Deadline for receiving applications: Friday December 11, 2009.

The selected artists participate to the program completely free of charge. Art Omi offers room and board, a studio space, and the opportunity to participate to a monotype workshop, as well as exposure to the NYC art scene via an intensive studio visits program, and with the opportunity to exhibit the work created during the residency to hundreds of art lovers who visit the center on Open Day Sunday, July 18.

MacDowell Colony, Upcoming Application Deadline: September 15, 2009

The MacDowell Colony, located in Peterborough, New Hampshire, was founded in 1907 by composer Edward MacDowell and Marian MacDowell, his wife, and was the first artist colony in the United States. Lower Manhattan Cultural Council - Swing Space Project-Based Residencies

The Lower Manhattan Cultural Council announces its open call for applications for Swing Space Project-Based Residencies. Vermont Studio Center, International Residency Fellowships Deadline: June 15, 2009

a) 2 artistic projects in MADRID - approx. 5 mo. period (June to October 2009).

The Woodstock Byrdcliffe Guild, located in the Catskill Mountains offers:

Lower Manhattan Cultural Council Open Call for 2009-2010 Workspace Studio Residencies

LMCC announces it's Workspace studio residency program in Lower Manhattan for emerging visual artists and writers focussed on the creative process.

Addressed to: emerging and early-career professional artists and writers (including international artists and writers and collaboratives pairsof no more than two (2) people working in all disciplines:

Visual artists: can apply in Drawing, Painting, Photography, Sculpture, Film/Video/Installation/Mixed Media, Sound, Performace and New Media/Computer Arts.

Writers: can apply in Fiction, Non-Fiction, Playwriting/Screenwriting, and Poetry.

Montehermoso, Vitoria, Spain - Call for Projects

The Montehermoso Cultural Center, located in Vitoria, northern province of Alava, Spain, is located in a 16th century renaissance palace.

It announces grants for production, curatorial projects and research.


Number of grants for artistic creation: maximum of 8 projects currently in preproduction or production, to pr esent then within Montehermoso's annual program (second quarter of 2010).
Benefits: maximum of 10,000 euros/project

Grant for a curatorial project: Benefits not to exceed 21.000 euros.

Djerassi Artist-in-Residency Program, 2010

Location: spectacular rural setting in the Santa Cruz Mountains over-looking the Pacific Ocean

Program: designed as a retreat experience to pursue personal creative work and share in collegial interaction within a small community of artists.

Residencies: awarded competitively, at no cost, to national and international artists in the disciplines of choreography, literature, music composition, visual arts, and media arts/new genres.

Addressed to: emerging and mid-career artists, for whom appointments as resident artists may make a significant difference to their careers, as well as from established artists with national and/or international reputations.

Benefits: living and studio space for 4-5 week sessions, plus meals

Period: mid-March through mid-November.

Artists' Barn: contains 3 visual art studios, a large dance studio, a darkroom, and a music composition studio with a baby grand and electric piano.

Matadero Madrid convoca ayudas a la movilidad internacional de creadores para la ampliación de estudios, la investigación y la realización, producción y desarrollo de proyectos de creación en el exterior.

Objetivo:

- brindar a los creadores y profesionales de la cultura de Madrid la oportunidad de enriquecer su trabajo mediante su integración en otros contextos, contribuir al intercambio cultural y favorecer la proyección internacional de la creación madrileña en todos sus ámbitos.

- facilitar la movilidad para la organización y participación en proyectos de formación artística y humanística en instituciones especializadas internacionales; producción de proyectos de creación contemporáneo en instituciones especializadas internacionales; promoción y difusión de los creadores y la creación madrileña en eventos, acciones, iniciativas y redes internacionales.

Dotación: máximo por beneficiario: 12.000 euros

Natalie Jeremijenko: artist and engineer, is an Associate Professor at NYU in the Visual Art Dept., and has affiliated faculty appointments in Computer Science and Envrionmental Studies. Her projects—which explore socio-technical change—have been exhibited by several museums and galleries, including the MASSMoCA, the Whitney Museum, Smithsonian Cooper-Hewitt.
