Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, Deadline: Sept. 15, 2010

The Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, located at Mt. San Angelo, a 12-acre estate in the foothills of Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains, about one hour south of Charlottesville. is a year-round community that provides a supportive environment for superior national and international visual artists, writers and composers of all economic and cultural backgrounds to pursue their creative work without distraction in a pastoral residential setting.

Sept. 15, 2010 deadline: for 4 week (average length) residencies between Feb. and May 2011.

Studios/special equipment

Fellows at the VCCA work in their own private studio, located in a renovated Normandy style barn built in the 1930s. Eleven studios are dedicated for writers, nine for visual artists. The three studios for composers are equipped with pianos and one also has a Roland Electronic Keyboard. All studios are air-conditioned and heated.

The visual artists' studios are 500 to 700 square feet in size, with skylights, large northeast windows, and sinks, all on the ground floor. One studio is equipped with a Dickerson combination press. A sculptors' studio has 220-volt power and a loading dock. A darkroom with two enlargers for printing 35mm and 4x5 negatives is available for photographers.

Artists are accepted to the VCCA without regard for their ability to contribute financially to their residency. A contribution is requested, but not required.

2010 Madrid Regional Government Grants for Artistic Production, Deadline: April 28, 2010

These awards are addressed to Spanish artists who work in painting, drawing, comics, printmaking, sculpture, mixed media, photography, video, installations and multimedia techniques in need of financial aid in order to carry out an artistic project.

Maximum Award: 10.000 euros

Important Note: 20% of these awards are earmarked for artists under the age of 35.

MacDowell Colony, Peterborough, New Hampshire. Fall deadline: April 15, 2010

The MacDowell Colony, founded in 1906 and located in the Monadnock region of New Hampshire, provides time, space, and an inspiring environment to artists of exceptional talent.

A MacDowell Fellowship, or residency, consists of exclusive use of a studio, accommodations, and three prepared meals a day for up to 8 weeks.

The Colony accepts applications from artists working in the following disciplines: architecture, film/video arts, interdisciplinary arts, literature, music composition, theatre, and visual arts. The sole criterion for acceptance is artistic excellence.

Application Deadline (receipt at the Colony in Peterborough, not postmark): April 15, 2010 for Fall residencies that run between October 1, 2010 and January 31, 2011.

Lower Manhattan Cultural Council: Workspace Studio Residency Deadline: March 25, 2010

Workspace is a 9-month studio residency program run by the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council in New York.

Addressed to: emerging visual artists and writers focused on the creative process. Collaborative pairs, of no more than two, may apply.

Benefits: Residents receive free studio space in Lower Manhattan for 9 months, a modest one-time stipend (depending on funding), access to a community of peers, meetings and studio visits with arts and literary professionals, and exposure to new audiences through open studios and other public programs.

Deadline: March 25, 2010 (in-office, not postmark deadline)
